Surfers ill from trip in mid-September — Large swell brings cocktail of “oil and dispersant to the surface”

A few months after the spill, the Surfrider Foundation was contacted by Chuck Barnes, Director of Eastern Surfing Association (Alabama District). Chuck informed us that he and several people became ill after surfing in mid-September… They are the “canaries in the coal-mine”. They are in the water several times a week…

All of the surfers I spoke with complained of throat/nose/ear problems, accompanied by skin rashes, and burning eyes/lips after surfing during a large swell.
