Connie Burton was born and raised in Tampa. She is a mother, a grandmother and a long time activist who represents the poor, the impoverished and public housing residents. Connie hosted a popular radio show called "Straight Talk" on WMNF-FM 88.5 in Tampa where she talked about the important issues affecting the poor and their communities. She is a former member of the International People's Democratic Uhuru Movement and the African People's Socialist Party. She is the chairman of the Black People’s Advancement & Defense Organization.
She states that, “...liberation and freedom is what the Black Community as a whole needs to claim. There is continued disparity in housing, healthcare and education. In order to save ourselves, we need to free ourselves.” Connie's undying love for African people, her vision for the future and her unwavering belief that the Black Community will eventually win their freedom is clearly expressed in her words and actions.

Maybe we should develop a Crayola bomb as our next secret weapon. A happiness weapon. A beauty bomb. And every time a crisis developed, we would launch one. It would explode high in the air - explode softly - and send thousands, millions, of little parachutes into the air. Floating down to earth - boxes of Crayolas. And we wouldn’t go cheap, either - not little boxes of eight. Boxes of sixty-four, with the sharpener built right in. With silver and gold and copper, magenta and peach and lime, amber and umber and all the rest. And people would smile and get a little funny look on their faces and cover the world with imagination. ~Robert Fulghum
