Janisse Ray's Bio:

Writer, naturalist, and activist Janisse Ray is author of five books of literary nonfiction and a collection of nature poetry. Her most recent book, The Seed Underground: A Growing Revolution to Save Food is a look at what’s happening to seeds, which is to say the future of food. The book has won the American Society of Journalists & Authors’ Arlene Eisenberg Award for Writing that Makes a Difference and an American Horticultural Society Book Award.

Ray is on the faculty of Chatham University’s low-residency MFA program. She holds an MFA from the University of Montana and in 2007 was awarded an honorary doctorate from Unity College in Maine.

Her first book, Ecology of a Cracker Childhood, a memoir about growing up on a junkyard in the ruined longleaf pine ecosystem of the Southeast, was published by Milkweed Editions in 1999. The book won a Southeastern Booksellers Award for Nonfiction 1999, an American Book Award 2000, the Southern Environmental Law Center 2000 Award for Outstanding Writing, and a Southern Book Critics Circle Award 2000.  Ecology of a Cracker Childhood was a New York Times Notable Book and was chosen as the Book All Georgians Should Read.  Besides a plea to protect and restore the glorious pine flatwoods, the book is a hard look at family, mental illness, poverty, and fundamentalist religion. Essayist Wendell Berry called the book “well done and deeply moving.” Anne Raver of The New York Times said of Janisse, “The forests of the South find their Rachel Carson.”

Janisse’s second book, Wild Card Quilt: Taking a Chance on Home  (about rural community) was published by Milkweed Editions in early 2003. The third, Pinhook: Finding Wholeness in a Fragmented Land (the story of a 750,000-acre wildland between south Georgia and north Florida) was published by Chelsea Green in 2005. Her first book of poetry, A House of Branches, came out in 2010 from Wind Publication and won a Southern Booksellers Award for Poetry 2011Drifting Into Darien: A Personal and Natural History of the Altamaha River -- a lovesong and a call to action -- was released by UGA Press in 2011.

The author has been visiting professor at Coastal Carolina University, scholar-in-residence at Florida Gulf Coast University, and writer-in-residence at Keene State College and Green Mountain College. She was the John & Renee Grisham writer-in-residence 2003-04 at the University of Mississippi. Janisse attempts to live a simple, sustainable life on Red Earth Farm in southern Georgia with her husband and daughter. Janisse is an organic gardener, tender of farm animals, slow-food cook, and seed-saver. She lectures widely on nature, community, agriculture, wildness, sustainability, and the politics of wholeness.

I am currently living in Hernando County Florida - with two teenage daughters. As a child I lived many places in the United States, was born in California then traveled throughout Europe and lived as a child in the Azores Islands.

I have a certificate in Horticulture Science from Edison State College, with many years as nursery - woman with knowledge specializing in tropicals and subtropical species and crop production. Later I attended Pasco Hernando Community College and Saint Leo University in pursuit of a degree in Human Services - decided that working in the agricultural world was better suited for me and changed back to my life’s path.

My adult life since the age twenty three is in the profession of horticulture. I am a past business owner, nurserywoman, florist, interior scaping, agricultural consultant, crop advisor. With an emphasis on floral, specimen and tropical species, it is my specialty to work with warmer climate agriculture. I have lectured from growing herbs, fruit trees, raised beds, orchids, greenhouse transplant growing, to preparations of seedlings to soils. Growing and preparation of greenhouses, hoop houses, hydroponics, aqua culture and vertical growing are also part of my background.

Currently I work as an Agricultural and Sustainable Farming Consultant and Coordinator for the manufacture of bio-nutrients, fungicides, organic inputs and pesticides. I work with the formulator and chemist consulting with distributors of our proven products and address farms needs world-wide. Adding to my routine, networking, and outreach classes, lecturing on sustainability public speaking and teaching best farming management skills along with one on one consulting strategies and sales.

I enjoy time with my daughters, fishing and gardening.

Company requests oil drilling permit in Naples/IF THIS IS APPROVED, IT MEANS THAT THERE WILL BE OIL DRILLING CLOSE TO THE EVERGLADES

Legislators prepare for potential ‘fracking’ in Florida

TALLAHASSEE -- No one knows if Florida is going to be the next frontier for the new generation of oil and gas drilling known as fracking, but state legislators say — just in case — it’s time to write rules to require disclosure of the controversial technology.
The Florida House on Wednesday is expected to pass a bill that will require companies to disclose what chemicals they use when they explore for oil and gas using the controversial extraction process.
Fracking uses hydraulic fracturing technology to inject water, sand and chemicals underground to create fractures in rock formations. Oil and gas is released through the fissures and is captured by wells, built at the sites. Environmentalists warn that the chemical makeup of the fluid that is pumped into the ground could contaminate groundwater and release harmful pollutants, such as methane, into the air.
"The Fracturing Chemical Usage Disclosure Act," sponsored by Rep. Ray Rodriques, R-Estero, would require the state Division of Resource Management to set up an online chemical registry for owners and operators of wells, service companies, and suppliers that use hydraulic fracturing.
