About Karen Morian
Karen Morian was born in Tallahassee and grew up in New Smyrna Beach. She is the proud product of Volusia County public schools and knows from personal experience the possibility for public schools to expose students to the diversity of our society, to afford them opportunities to grow in new ways, and to create cohesion in a community. During her childhood, she saw the damage to individuals and to society of inequality, and she became a lifelong advocate for those who have been denied, denigrated, or excluded. Her father was an electrician, and her mother was a teacher; both were union members and were able to provide quality insurance coverage, something she believes all families deserve. She worked her way through college and graduate school as a work-study student, as a teaching assistant, and at part-time jobs, receiving degrees from Stetson University (BA) and Florida State University (MA, PhD). She then began teaching and working with community organizations.

Professional Experience
Since 1991, Karen Morian has been working with the students of Florida as a teacher and as a mentor to ensure their success in life. She has been an advocate for education funding; for academic freedom; and for the rights of students, faculty, and staff. She has served as a Teaching Assistant and Adjunct Faculty member at Florida State University, Tallahassee Community College, and North Florida Community College and as a full-time faculty member of Florida Community College, now Florida State College at Jacksonville. In addition to teaching and creating new courses of interest to the students at FSCJ, she has written two national grants and served in numerous college service positions including Chair of the Capstone Committee, member of the Faculty Senate, member of the Humanities Council, and as state Senator for the United Faculty of Florida. She has also served as the faculty advisor for student organizations such as the Gay-Straight Alliance and Students for Community Involvement.

Community Involvement For the past three decades, Karen Morian has worked with community leaders and ordinary citizens to better the lives of Floridians. She believes in the relationship of rights and responsibilities and in the power of citizens to work together to improve our communities. To that end, she has served on the Board of Citihomes of San Marco, as both a member and as president. She is a member of WJCT, Stetson Alumni, FSU Alumni, the Central Labor Council of Jacksonville, Northeast Florida Sierra Club, the NAACP, and the Cummer Museum. Nationally, she is a member of the National Education Association, the American Association of University Women, the Modern Language Association, and the National Council on Higher Education. In the past she has worked with various local, state, and national organizations such as the American Friends Service Committee and Habitat for Humanity.

FL Governor to water district: Sell off ‘surplus’ parks and preserves

STORY BY STEVEN M. THOMAS, (Week of July 12, 2012)
St. Johns River Water Management District is reviewing 90,000 acres of conservation lands in Indian River County for sale or alternate uses.

Governor Rick Scott has ordered the St. Johns River Water Management District to review all of its conservation lands and make recommendations about which lands should be sold or traded away by the end of the year.

“Everything is on the table,” says Robert Christianson, director of operations and land resources for the agency.

That includes state parks, land bought with money approved by voters specifically for land conservation, and lands bought under the Florida Forever program – which may not be forever, after all.

Over the past 30 years, St. Johns has accumulated 600,000 acres of wetlands and other environmentally critical property to preserve waterways and manage the water supply in the 16 Florida counties it serves.

Indian River County has the second-largest amount of St. Johns owned land – 90,000 acres – and all of it is being considered for possible disposal, including pristine wetlands around Blue Cypress Lake and other ecologically irreplaceable parcels most people assumed would be protected forever.

Christianson says environmentalists and other district residents should not be alarmed by the review. As he explains it, the process is science-based and only marginal conservation lands no longer needed for water management purposes will be recommended for sale or alternative uses.

But he admits that, regardless of the results of the scientific review of land importance, disposal decisions will be policy driven.

The Long Shadow of the BP Oil Spill Keeps Killing Baby Birds

By Julie Dermansky
  Jul 12 2012, 9:00 AM ET
In Louisiana, experts say barrier islands are vanishing "like sugar in coffee." That's bad news for the waterfowl whose newly hatched chicks are being washed away.
baby-bird-top.jpgJulie Dermansky
Two years after the BP oil spill, Louisiana is still grappling with its aftermath. I saw this firsthand during a recent visit to Cat Island, a barrier island in Plaquemeins Parrish. The oil spill killed the much of the vegetation that serves as a nesting ground for pelicans and other migrating waterfowl.

More Info on TB Cases in Florida

Worst TB outbreak in 20 years kept secret --State rushes closure of its only TB hospital in Lantana 08 Jul 2012 The CDC officer had a serious warning for Florida health officials in April: A tuberculosis outbreak in Jacksonville was one of the worst his group had investigated in 20 years. Linked to 13 deaths and 99 illnesses, including six children, it would require concerted action to stop. That report had been penned on April 5, exactly nine days after Florida Gov. [Terrorist] Rick Scott (R) signed the bill that shrank the Department of Health and required the closure of the A.G. Holley State Hospital in Lantana, where tough tuberculosis cases have been treated for more than 60 years.

Famine in America? Why 99% of the U.S. Is in Danger of Starvation

This article was written in 2008, but very timely indeed.
Read, share and start to PREPARE!

Nearly everyone recognizes that the U.S. may be in for very hard times in the near future. Some economists are predicting financial collapse as catastrophic as the Great Depression. With a significant number of people now living in cities, far away from their food sources, one may be left to wonder if the degree of famine this time around may result in the starvation of the roughly 240 millionn Americans who are incapable of growing their own food.

The idea isn't as farfetched or alarmist as it may seem at first glance. At the turn of the 20th century, more than fifty percent of the American labor force earned a living through direct involvement in agriculture, but this number decreased to just 2% by the year 2000. Even more frighteningly, only .8% of Americans are involved in the industry full-time.
